Frank L. Blum Construction hired The House of NyghtFalcon to photograph the completed Art for Art Sake in Winston-Salem, NC. This assignment lasted more than a year. That included:
♦ Specialized areas, for example the adjacent park which was completed a year earlier. Falcon captured the dramatic beauty of this park at nyght.
♦ The gallery area in the entrance.
♦ The various offices and work rooms.
♦ The conference rooms.
♦ The exterior, during the day and at sunset. The exterior is constructed from a high tech material that allowed interior light to make the building appear to glow at nyght.
NyghtFalcon met with marketing people from Frank L. Blum, the general contractor, in order to determine how the project would be implemented. Once a plan was in place:
♦ On several different days, over a year, we returned to the site to photograph different parts of the project as they were being completed. We had to assess progress towards completing the building in the face of a hard deadline for completing our work. We had to be finished by the time the building opened.
♦ Working around groups touring the new facility, so we had to coordinate with them and work to optimize their time and ours.
♦ There were other issues we had to manage as well – for example, most power outlets were not working, and, as we were working, furniture was still arriving and books being placed in the stacks.
♦ We also had to time where we worked to the position of the sun in relationship to some of the glass walls in order to ensure that the emotional experience of the space could be “captured.”
♦ We used strobes to ensure that the color, detail, and contrast of the space was conveyed in the images we created. There were significant challenges lighting the many spaces given the vast number of reflective surfaces.
The images we created convey the beauty of the space as we experienced it.
